Migraines Suck…and Other Deep Thoughts

I didn’t sleep well last night. I think I fell asleep around 2:30AM and then woke up again around 3:30AM.  I felt like I was getting a migraine and I should have taken some medicine then and there, but I figured I could go back to sleep and I’d feel better.

Nope. Didn’t happen. From my should to the base of my skull on the left side is one large knot. I even thought about going to get a manicure today just so I could add on the 15 minute massage.

Even though the weather has warmed up to a now balmy 30 degrees, I’m finding the aches and pains of the fibromyalgia and rheumatoid arthritis to be difficult. My lower back is stiff and in pain, and when your back hurts, it’s really tough to get comfortable.

I do have a prescription for migraine medicine that to me works better than anything. The only problem is that it isn’t covered by my insurance. I was thrilled when Maxalt was finally made into a generic, but even the generic is $90 for four pills. Needless to say, I try Execedrin Migraine first and if it gets horrible, I reluctantly pop a Maxalt.

I don’t want to get political, but I think most people with autoimmune issues can agree that health care is an obstacle. Whether it’s seeing a specialist or convincing the insurance companies to pay for medicines to help with the pain. When I got laid off from my last full-time job, I did their COBRA plan for a year and then was forced to get my own insurance.

At the time I was on Topamax daily as a preventative for migraines and I also needed the Maxalt to treat the migraines when they happened. Since I was going for private insurance, I learned quickly that people don’t want to cover you if you are on daily meds. I was put into a higher risk pool, and they put a rider on my plan not to cover anything to do with my migraines.

I just don’t understand how they can do that. I don’t even want to think about how difficult it will be now that I have a fibromyalgia and RA diagnosis. It’s on my “to do” list to check out the plans in my state now that the whole obamacare thing went through. Supposedly, they can’t deny insurance for a pre-existing condition. I’ll get back to you on that when I look into it this week.

Also thank you for your comments on the blog. Please feel free to answer each other’s questions or join my Facebook page for Autoimmune Mama to keep the conversation going.

For now, I’m going to put ice on the back of my neck and hope I don’t wake up with this migraine tomorrow.
